What Are Dentures?

Dentures are artificial replacements for missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. They are custom-designed to fit your mouth, providing a comfortable and secure fit. Depending on your needs, dentures can be removable or permanently fixed in place. Modern dentures use advanced materials, making them more comfortable, durable, and visually appealing.

What Are the Different Types of Dentures?

Here’s a quick guide to the various types of dentures, helping you choose the best option for your needs:

What Is a Soft Reline for Dentures?

A soft reline involves lining the base of your denture with a soft, flexible material. This helps to reduce sore spots and discomfort that can be caused by the hard acrylic of traditional dentures. A soft reline can last up to two years and greatly improves the comfort of your dentures.

When Might I Need One?

You might need a soft reline if you’re experiencing sore spots or discomfort from your dentures. It’s particularly beneficial for individuals with sensitive gums or those who have recently had dental surgery.

Answers to Common Questions

How do I know if I need a full denture or a partial denture?
Determining whether you need a full or partial denture depends on the condition of your remaining teeth. A full denture is used when all teeth in an arch are missing or need to be extracted due to extensive damage or decay. A partial denture is suitable if you still have some healthy teeth remaining. Your dentist will assess your oral health and recommend the best option based on the number and condition of your remaining teeth.
What are the advantages of implant-supported dentures compared to traditional dentures?
Implant-supported dentures offer several advantages over traditional dentures. They provide better stability and prevent the dentures from slipping or moving while speaking or eating. This type of denture also helps maintain jawbone density, preventing bone loss that often occurs with traditional dentures. Additionally, implant-supported dentures can offer a more natural look and feel, improving overall comfort and confidence.
Can I eat normally with dentures, and are there any foods I should avoid?
Yes, you can eat a variety of foods with dentures, but it may take some time to adjust. Initially, you should start with soft foods and gradually reintroduce more challenging foods as you become accustomed to your dentures. It’s advisable to avoid very hard, sticky, or chewy foods, as these can dislodge or damage your dentures. Cut food into smaller pieces and chew slowly to aid in the adjustment process.
How do I properly care for my dentures to ensure their longevity?
Proper care of dentures involves regular cleaning and maintenance. Clean your dentures daily with a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive denture cleanser to remove food particles and plaque. Avoid using hot water as it can warp the dentures. When not in use, store your dentures in water or a denture-soaking solution to prevent them from drying out. Additionally, regular dental check-ups are crucial to ensure the fit and function of your dentures.
Are there any financing options available for dentures, and does insurance typically cover the cost?
Many dental practices offer financing options to help manage the cost of dentures. This can include payment plans or third-party financing through companies like CareCredit. Insurance coverage for dentures varies; some dental insurance plans cover a portion of the cost, particularly for medically necessary extractions and basic dentures. It’s essential to check with your insurance provider to understand your benefits and discuss financing options with your dental office.

A FIVE-STAR EXPERIENCE

Dr Myra did 2 fillings and a crown for me today. Throughout, she and Jazz, her Assistant, made sure I was comfortable.
I was given a light blanket ( the a.c. was too cold for me ), Jazz put Vaseline on my lips to avoid drying when my mouth was open wide and I listened to music while
they worked.
They made having the work done as pleasant as possible.
I recommend this Dentist and her Team for your Dental needs.
